I love writing and receiving letters because they are written directly for someone ( often someone you love) and show that you care and have taken the time to put pen to paper and the recipient can keep forever if they wish!

I think my love of writing and receiving letters goes back to being away from home at teacher training college in the 1960s. Very different times. I was away from home for a term at a time. My parents did not have a phone so letters were the only way to keep in touch. I have embraced modern technology and frequently use it but old habits die hard and I still love the ‘old ways’!

It is such a personal touch which takes time and effort so is much appreciated when received.

I love writing letters, once I put pen to paper there is no stopping me, and the thrill of receiving something other than junk mail or bills in the post is very exciting.

I love writing letters, especially emotional ones as they feel like they are actually going to mean something. I put a lot more thought into it then just an email or text. Receiving a letter is even more special! I love to keep them, re-read them and keep them safe

My friends and I like to write to each other at least every other month and usually include a little something just to make each other smile :) writing is so good for the mind and even better when received. #happypost

Writing letters . . . It’s just more personal and gives me a sense of satisfaction to know I will be putting a smile on someone’s face when they receive my letter.

Receiving letters . . . Because someone took the time to write it with a pen on paper instead of just hammering away at their keyboard, and a lot more thought has gone into the content.

There is an extra connection to sitting down and thinking about the message you are writing – rather than just a rambling conversation. When receiving letters I can see and feel the effort the writer has made as well, I think it builds the connection between the two people

I love writing letters and always have done. Nothing beats getting a handwritten letter in the post!

I love writing because it makes the message so much more personal and I can make someone smile

I have always loved writing and receiving letters as it is a lovely way to stay in touch, to be able to express yourself better and convey personal feelings, interesting news, triumphs, congratulations or commiserations. I still have a few people that I write letters and send the odd card to – I know they enjoy my missives. My dad is waiting to see whether or not he has responded to recent chemo & radiotherapy for cancer and called to crack a joke that he had been planning to start reading a book but had a 10-page letter to plough his way through first! Guilty as charged.

It’s relaxing and makes me feel good

I have just one relative who communicates by letter and I love to receive, and reply to, her letters. I get to choose pretty stationery and pens and make sure my handwriting has not deteriorated completely!

Rachel Lewis on

I love receiving letters. It’s so authentic and more heartfelt.
